Commodore Sujeet Samaddar, NM (Retd)
Samaddar graduated from IIT Roorkee (B.E) in 1978. Samaddar began his career as an Engineer Trainee with Tata Consulting Engineers, Mumbai. After being commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1980, he held various staff appointments and commanded four warships before taking an early retirement in 2009 in the highly prestigious appointment of Principal Director Naval Plans, Naval Headquarters, New Delhi responsible for acquisition, infrastructure and budget of the Indian Navy. He is recipient of the CNS Commendation and the Nau Sena Medal.
He is an alumnus of United Nations University, Tokyo, where he was awarded the UNU-Eisaku Sato Grand Medal. He is an alumnus of the highly prestigious National Institute of Defense Studies, Tokyo and of the University of Madras, Chennai. He has also been a Visiting Fellow at the United Services Institution, New Delhi and at the Japan Institute of International Affairs, Tokyo. He speaks English, Hindi, Bengali and Japanese.
Post retirement he served as Vice President Operations, NOVA Integrated Systems, a TATA Enterprise and later as, Director and CEO of ShinMaywa Industries India Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of ShinMaywa Industries Ltd, Japan until 2015. Subsequently, he was Senior Consultant (Industry), NITI Aayog, Government of India in-charge of the policy verticals of the national aero and defence industry, blue economy, circular economy, recycling, civil aircraft program, shipbuilding until January 2019.
He was the Member Secretary of the NITI AAYOG Task Force on Drafting India’s first comprehensive National Maritime Policy. He also drafted India’s first comprehensive and integrated National Material Recycling Policy. His other contributions to policy include Defence FDI policy, Re-engineering Defence Acquisitions, Small Arms Manufacturing Policy and drafting the CAR on RPAS with DGCA, Govt of India. He has also drafted India’s First Automotive Recycling Policy under the MoRT&H, Govt of India. His paper on establishing a National Development Bank for Shipping and Shipbuilding is under consideration of the Ministry of Shipping.
His present assignments, Director of a US subsidiary space technology company, Senior Scientific Advisor to Hanover Square Capital (UK) Ltd, Consultant (Recycling) to MSTC Ltd – a miniratna company, Advisor to the Material Recycling Organisation of India (MRAI) where he pursues his passion for the promotion of the Circular economy and sustainable economic growth through green recycling process. He is the Founder and Secretary of SAMDeS, New Delhi, Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Air Power Studies, and proprietor of a marquee consultancy firm apart from being on the Governing council of a few think tanks and mentor to two think tanks on SDGs and CE. In his pursuit for sustainability he has championed the Global Maritime Accord program across six continents and several institutions and has prepared the first feasibility report for aircraft reclamation in India.
He has numerous articles on the subject of Recycling, Circular Economy, Maritime matters and is the author of two books – including Minerals, Markets and Maritime Strategy. As advisor to MRAI he is actively involved in policy advocacy, drafting of standards for the recycling industry representation to the Government etc. A recent article Green Steel for Green Mobility has been recently published and presented at the 5th International Conference on Steel at Mumbai. He recently completed the IATA Certificate Course on Aircraft Decommissioning and Reclamation.
